Academy Award Nominations

Director Martin Scorsese has said he made Hugo so he could make a film he and his daughter could enjoy together.  That sentiment has clearly resonated with Oscar voters, who rewarded Scorsese's adaptation of the Brian Selznick children's book with a leading eleven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.  Nominations were announced Tuesday morning in Beverly Hills, California.

The black-and-white critical favorite The Artist follows close behind Hugo, with ten nominations including Best Director and Best Picture, as well as Best Actor for Jean Dujardin and Best Supporting Actress for Bérénice Bejo.  The critically-acclaimed comedy-drama The Descendants won just five nominations but they're in all the right categories, including Best Picture, Best Director for Alexander Payne, and Best Actor for George Clooney.  Clooney's joined in the Best Actor category by his pal Brad Pitt, who earned a nod for Moneyball, which itself has a total of six nominations, including Best Picture.  Rounding out the Best Picture category are Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Help, Midnight in Paris, Tree of Life, and War Horse.

The 84th annual Academy Awards will be presented Sunday, February 26, live on ABC.  Billy Crystal returns as host.
