I am not Irish. Well, not that I know of. I am, however, ready for this weekend. Tomorrow is the First Ward parade is tomorrow on Hamburg, O'Connell, Elk & Smith Street. Most of the people know this one because they live in the neighborhood. The larger parade is set for this Sunday, in our downtown Buffalo in Niagara Square at 2pm. At 3pm, you can go to the Hotel at the Lafayette for no cover, free parking, in Pan Am Brewery & Grill on Washington Street (reminds me of 'The Hunger Games'). There, you can purchase Irish beverages, enjoy Irish music and dancers, and opens up before the parade if anyone wants some grub. Music will be from 3:30-7:30pm. You can park in the parking lot behind the brewery on Ellicott Street.
It's always good to have options this weekend. If you are not feeling downtown, Allentown is nearby to cater for your St. Patty's Day festivities. Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar opens at 12pm this Sunday for celebrating. With their complimentary corned beef and cabbage, they are open until 4am! Located right on Allen Street, try their food because kitchen closes at 3am. Whether you want to go bar hopping, having a nice meal, or enjoying the parade, OR all three, be sure to deck yourself out in GREEN. Irish or not, we live in Buffalo people. Let's give St. Patrick's Day 2014 a party like no other...without the drunken fights.
When I think about my childhood, the first thing that comes in my mind is music, then television. The artists I listened to, the shows I watched, movies I adored. A lot hasn’t changed. The battle between Britney, Christina, Jessica, and yes, Mandy Moore was ongoing until Mandy stopped recording, Jessica married Nick Lachey, and Britney married Kevin Federline. Which one is not like the other? Christina Maria Aguilera. I put her above the others due to her versatility. From ‘Genie in a Bottle’ to ‘Dirrty’ to ‘Ain’t No Other Man’ to ‘Not Myself Tonight’ and so on, Christina demonstrated she is capable of anything in the pop music industry.
Her “genie” days go back to when Christina was 18 years old and by 2000, she won Best New Artist at the Grammy’s. When she turned 21 and released Stripped, she not only made a statement she wasn’t a teenager anymore but jam packed an album of empowering singles. There was ‘Beautiful,’ ‘Can’t Hold Us Down’ ft. Lil’ Kim, and ‘Fighter’ that exhibited her seriousness to succeed as pop star unlike any of her generation. Though Sarah Michelle Gellar did a poor parody of the pop star on an episode of Saturday Night Live regarding her controversial ‘Dirrty’ music video, Christina Aguilera replied at the time that she could have done a better job making fun of herself.
I’ll skip ahead to 2006 when Back to Basics was literally, back to basics. From fluff songs like “Ain’t No Other Man’ to heart wrenching songs such as ‘Hurt,’ definitely paid tribute to her 6-octave range of vocalic. She was awarded the Best Pop Vocal Performance for ‘Ain’t No Other Man’ at the Grammy’s in 2007. The album had its own persona of 1920’s-1950’s style of music, dating back to a more classic era. Christina also changed her look from a hoop nose ring and black streaks to red lipstick and a 40s hairdo as a blonde bombshell. At 25 years old and recently married to Jordan Bratman, Christina composed an album of her desires and fears of entering the family world.
After having her son Max, Christina took a short break after Keeps Gettin’ Better: A Decade of Hits in 2008 until Bionic released in 2010. I remember when she recently gave birth in 2008 and performed at the MTV Video Music Awards and they honored her for the Generation Award. People were commenting on the spandex black jumpsuit she had worn that “made her look fat.” I was shocked reading this for the first time thinking the scrutiny Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson consistently faced on this topic. But, Christina was always petite as can be. When Burlesque hit theaters in 2010, her figure was said to be “back to the way it was.” The first film at age 29, starring alongside the pop sensation, Cher, Christina had already done it all.
In 2011, she signed on as one of the judges for the singing competition TV show, The Voice, along with Maroon 5’s Adam Levine and Cee-Lo Green. Since this past Valentine’s Day, she’s engaged to Matthew Rutler, and maintains a civil relationship with her ex-husband. Ten days later, she finds out she is pregnant! With a wedding and a baby on the way, I hope this doesn’t put a halt to her music career. I want something more after A Great Big World’s ‘Say Something.’
When you hear the word diva, a few names may come to mind such as Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, etc., but the one that should stand out the most would have to be, the one and only, Mariah Carey. Her fame and angelic voice is legendary. With her breath taking high notes and collection of numerous awards, Mariah takes home the title as the queen diva.
How talented is Mariah? Well, just to put into perspective of how her talent has truly changed her life, here are a few of her attributions to the music industry. Her success is legendary: with over 200 million records sold worldwide, 9 multiplatinum albums, more number 1 hits than any other solo artist, 79 weeks at number 1 on the billboard’s hot 100, most number 1’s on hot 100 female song writers, most number 1’s on hot 100 female producer, with 2 singles declared song of the decade, a world-wide best-selling Christmas Album, her legendary 5 octave range, 12 BET awards,5 Grammy’s, 17 music awards including artist of the millennium, BMI icon award. 21 AMA’s, and 31 billboard awards including artist of the decade, she is truly an international icon. It makes you wonder where on earth does she fit all of her record breaking awards!
Rise to stardom takes time and a lot of work, and for some, overcoming struggles. It almost seemed fame, talent, and glamour was destined to be in Mariah’s future. Mariah Carey was born on March 27th, 1970 in Long Island, New York. Her mother, Patricia Carey, was an opera star in New York and singing quickly became the center of Mariah’s life. At the age of 3 Mariah began to take a huge interest in singing and her mother would give her lessons. Growing up Mariah Carey had to overcome the hostility and stereotypes of being a mixed child, half Irish half African/ Venezuelan, and having divorced parents put her mother into a tough position; working many jobs to take care of three children on her own.
After high school she decided not to go to college, but take a jump start into her destined music career. Her talents were quickly noticed and producer Tommy Mottola from Sony/Columbia jumped at the chance to raise a star. He was also known for signing and contributing to the success of Whitney Houston. By the late 80’s early 90’s Mariah was preparing her first album, which little did she know would make music history.
As her first album reached the top of mainstream charts; Mariah Carey began her journey to mega stardom. For over 20 years Mariah has been creating music that has made an impact on the music industry. Recently she has released a single on February 12th from her new album debuting on May 6th, called “You’re Mine” as part of her Valentines appreciation. She has been promoting heavily on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to spread the love around the iconic holiday. To keep up with the super #diva, you can follow her @MariahCarey or check out updates, news, and sneak peeks on her personal website www.mariahcarey.com.

From the Mickey Mouse Club, to the movie screens, and the performance stage, does anyone come to your mind? Justin Randall Timberlake, or you may also know him as JT, has conquered all of these. January 31st 1981 was born a mega star that would soon emerge into the entertainment world. Many forget that he started off as a child star on Disney, but that can be credited as the start of his career, and the rest, well, is history.
Mr. Timberlake was born with music in his blood, a natural performer. He was greatly influenced by Michael Jackson when it came to his singing, dancing, and performance style. At the young age of 10 Justin sang his way to the Grand Ole Opry. Unknowingly at the time, it would be the first of many stages he would perform on.
Are you familiar with the Mickey Mouse Club? Well, Justin’s first official paid “gig” took place in 1993 on the Disney stage. It may have been a short 2 years on the Mickey Mouse club when it came to end for Justin in 1995, but that was all he needed. From the experience he met Brittney Spears (future girlfriend), and JC Chasez (future band mate). To say the least this experience was a major turning point in Justin’s professional career and personal life.
Justin proposed the idea of starting a boy band to JC after the Mickey Mouse Club in 1995 and that was the beginning of the famous NSYNC. The pop-oriented boy band had a quick growing fan base. Their first fast-selling album was released in 2000 “No Strings Attached”, once the band got going they were unstoppable. Can you remember a dull NSYNC performance? I know I can’t! I can shamelessly say I still listen to the catchy pop songs on a regular basis, and I may even have an NSYNC CD in my car CD player at this very moment.
The boy band decided to take a break from the fame in 2002, but Justin wasn’t feeling it. The thought of a solo career sounded intriguing to him, and the fans made it clear they wanted more Justin! He re-vamped his clean cut image and broke out on his own, and aren’t we all glad he did! He collaborated hip-hop with R&B and made us fall in love. Justin proved he could stand on his own. He’s performed in the Superbowl, appeared in movies, SNL, and show’s such as Punk’d on MTV.
Justin Timberlake is a singer-songwriter, actor, record producer, and businessman. He has dedicated his whole life to entertaining the world passionately. He is currently back at it on tour. The highly anticipated tour kicked off on October 31st and is still visiting cities throughout North America, Europe, Australia and South America! The 20/20 Experience World Tour is coming to Buffalo at the First Niagara Center on February 22nd. The show is SOLD OUT! So, if you are one of the lucky ones who will be in Justin Timberlake’s presence and graced with his beautiful voice and outstanding dance moves… I hope you have the time of your life, I guarantee you it will be an amazing show.
The obsession of ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’ is a nation-wide phenomenon my brain hasn’t been able to wonder why. I am wondering why now. With everything on the Internet, is there a reason for reality T.V. Sure, the behind-the-scenes are nice. The audience gets to be inside their lives and follow them around. But, it’s really not that interesting anymore; well, to me at least. The Kardashian clan all started with Rob Kardashian marrying Kris Houghton. We know Rob’s rise to fame came from O.J. Simpson’s murder trial back in 1995. But before that, he was a successful businessman raising his three daughters and son, Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, and Robert Jr. That’s enough of backstory. After Rob’s untimely death, Kris re-married to Bruce Jenner; a former U.S. track and field athlete. Then, Bruce and Kris Jenner had Kendall and Kylie Jenner. When the show premiered back in high school, I didn’t know who these people were and why they were famous.
Yes, it makes sense Robert Kardashian Sr. would earn his fame by defending O.J. This shouldn’t mean his ex-wife (yes, they divorced before he passed) and four kids should have their own show years later. Ok, I get it. Kourtney is with this Scott Disick guy she has been with since the show begun. They have two children together and seem to be happy (as long as Scott doesn’t party 24/7). First off, if you Google “Scott Disick” he is best known for ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians.’ He isn’t even famous, really. I believe the second biggest thing he featured in was one the new episodes of Punk’d in 2012. He is also an American reality T.V. star…I wonder from what. I wouldn’t think he is carrying on the oh-so popular Kardashian name.
On the flip side, Kim is the one who gets the most attention. I can’t speak for what happens in their own home when cameras are off. However, Kim is the one who is most featured and talked about on the show. She overshadows her older sister; and younger ones as well. The only reasoning I have for this is her relationship with Kanye West. I shouldn’t have to say who this character is. Their story is more complicated. Kanye’s ex-girlfriend Amber Rose claims he and Kim were dating back in 2010 when Kim dated NFL star Reggie Bush. Of course, this would be a scandalous claim in the world of celebrities. Kim says she didn’t start officially dating Kanye until 2012. But, she filed to divorce her husband of less than 3 months, Kris Humphries in October 2011. Fast forward to today, they have a daughter North “Nori” and soon to be married. People are more interested in Kim because she is more of a “fashionista,” because she dates famous celebrities, and now has a baby with one!
I’m not going to talk about each of them…but Khloe is the outcast in the show, in the media, and in life. When Lamar was arrested for a D.U.I., it was under more scrutiny than Scott’s partying. Lamar Odom is a star NBA player while Scott is…
His infidelity led Khloe to file for divorce after having proof of him cheating with at least five other women. Poor Khloe…watching the show, she is the one I can (and others who watch the show) can empathize with. This season was most tumultuous for Khloe, celebratory for Kim, and pretty much the same for Kourtney. It’s either Kim or Khloe in the spotlight. Kim is viewed in a positive light by constantly being referred to as “the prettiest one.” Khloe is typically viewed in a negative light as being “the uglier one.” Is it because Kourtney isn’t the prettiest or ugliest she isn’t important to mention? The show’s center revolves around drama and tragedy.
I can turn over to the Jenner’s. I’ve watched several episodes that have nothing to do with the Kardashians. Bruce’s son from a previous marriage, Brandon, was distraught over not having a relationship with his dad growing up. Bruce spent the majority of his time with Kris and the girls after his divorce. Again, this information is too private and sad to watch on a television. The producers’ goal is to make it look like they have fun together (sometimes) when most of the time, there is always a problem that is circling around each one of the family members. This is getting too long but, Kendall and Kylie? I don’t care about Kendall wanting to move out when she turned 18 and Kylie’s competing modeling/acting career against Kendall. They aren’t even Kardashians! Where’s Rob this whole time? Kim just gets on him about his weight and depression. Again, sad! This show needs to balance what they should show and not show because instead of “keeping up,” everyone will eventually give up trying to keep up.
What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas. Unless your name is Britney Spears and you signed a $30 million deal for a two-year residency, because in that case you sure would. There comes a point in some artist’s careers when they have reached that legendary status that merits a retrospective peek back into their musical journey. Though with Vegas comes plenty of contingencies, posing the question: is the prestigious Sin City residency the best career move?
With the recent announcement of Britney’s Vegas deal, you could almost hear the money being thrown left and right. A massive remodel of the Planet Hollywood resort venue, a reported $100k press stunt on Good Morning America (helicopter desert landing included), and the list goes on. The show, Britney Spears: Piece of Me, is being billed as an intimate 90-minute concert experience with a club meets theater vibe. In total, Spears is slated to perform a total of 100 shows between 2014 and 2015 with the possibility of adding even more. And despite the rumor mill churning with stories of bombing at the box office, reps for both Spears and Ceasers Entertainment insist that the shows are selling fantastically well and the demand has them scrambling to unveil the next batch of dates. Flights are being purchased and hotels are being booked as Britney fans from all over the world prep their mass migration.
The deal comes with limitations though, as it has been speculated that it ensures the only place to see Spears perform domestically for the next two years in the will be on the Strip. With her eighth studio album dropping in early December, this blocks out the possibility of an actual tour… something foreign to the pop music scene. However for Britney, this deal couldn’t be working out more in her favor if she tried. Not only does she get to be stationed in one place for extended periods with her children and avoid the constant travel, she’s getting paid likely the same amount (if not more) as she would per show on the road! Tour or no tour, the album will sell and the singles will be hits because she is at a stage in her career where that isn’t even a question. It takes a true superstar to sit pretty and have the fans come to you, and if anyone can do it, it’s Britney… b***h.
Let me start off by saying that I really didn’t want to write a Miley Cyrus blog. Everything that could possibly be said regarding her recent antics and VMA performance has been repeated on a loop for the past two weeks. Over the years, we’ve all seen our fair share of musicians evolve from teen role model to adult powerhouse, each with different audience reactions. With the recent behavior of the musician formerly known as Hannah Montana, I was inspired to look at whether or not her transition into adulthood differed from pop stars before her. So stop licking the sledgehammer for a second Miley, and let’s take a stroll down memory lane.
The identity transition taken on by Miley is strikingly similar to that of Christina Aguilera back in 2002. Leading up to the release of her second album, Stripped, Christina dyed her hair black and got inked with her new nickname “Xtina.” Provocative photo shoots followed, along with the scandalous video for the album’s first single, “Dirrty,” that featured the singer dropping it low in leather chaps and underwear. Parents were horrified that the former Mouseketeer took such a drastic departure from her “Genie in a Bottle” bubblegum-pop image, scrambling to cover the eyes of their children tuning in for their daily dose of TRL. Though the evolution in her career was controversial and left a fair share of feathers ruffled, it yielded major success for Christina and laid the foundation for what would end up being a successful career.
When it comes to Miley, she is following a blueprint that has proved effective for countless female pop stars before her. Somewhat similar adulthood-shift tactics have been used for years by the likes of Madonna, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Debbie Gibson, and Jessica Simpson. Whether the approach will work on the current demographic of music fans is an entirely different story though. What worked for Christina in the early 2000s could easily be ineffective with the current wave of pop music fans. If in 2000, I wanted to re-watch the video of Britney ripping off a black suit at the VMAs to reveal a flesh-colored bodysuit, I’d have to wait for the recast on MTV the next day. Now, YouTube puts the controversy at our finger tips and allows us to pull up content within seconds for analysis and comment. Tearing down an artist has never been easier, making the dynamic between musicians and public opinion even more complex.
Miley isn’t the first, and certainly won’t be the last celebrity to put the pedal to the metal with her image. Though the question is, will it continue to pay off?
I don’t think I’ve ever met a human being that does not enjoy the legend that is Beyoncé Giselle Knowles. Microsoft Word even autocorrected the accent on the “é” in her name as I typed it, so that must mean something. And while I too am a shameless member of the Beyhive, I can’t help but have a bone to pick with Mrs. Carter.
Let’s cut to back to February and the Super Bowl XLVII halftime performance that brought a blackout to the Superdome. In a spectacular display of talent, Beyoncé danced through fire, rolled among strobe lights, flipped her hair in the majestic wind, materialized Kelly and Michelle to reform Destiny’s Child and left everyone at home scrambling for their DVR remotes so they could rewind it back again. Seems like the perfect time to announce her fifth studio album, considering it had been two years since her last, right? Not even close.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve forgiven Blue Ivy for delaying my yearly ritual of unwrapping a fresh Beyoncé album, but now I’m getting antsy. With everyone glued to their TVs, I couldn’t imagine how she passed up the chance to premiere a new single during the halftime set. Soon after, when she released her Pepsi commercial set to the tune of the new song “Grown Woman,” I thought the time had finally come… but I was wrong yet again.
Now two strikes into my album anticipation, Beyoncé announced her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. There was no way she would go on a tour without a new album. No way, not a chance. It had to be coming out before then right? Wrong. She is not only touring with music from an album released two years ago, she is completely selling out every show. And as I sat for the fourth consecutive day trying to get tickets in the middle of my Media Ethics class, I realized that she is a force to be reckoned with.
To end the saga, I found myself standing in a crowd of excited Beyoncé fans in New Jersey last month waiting for the Mrs. Carter Show to start and change each and every one of our lives. And after two hours of non-stop perfection, Bey made one thing very clear: she’s a grown woman; she can do whatever she wants.

Diary Entry 5: Goodbye
Goodbye. The feeling a fan girl gets during the encore song at the end of a concert. The feeling she got when she received the news that Kevin left the Backstreet Boys. And last but not least, the feeling she gets when writing her final blog post about being the kind of girl who is no stranger to those emotions. But just like every good boy band break-up, this is not the end. There will be a reunion album in the future.
These past few months have been a blast and I have loved blogging here for all of my 716 fan girls. I have had so many great experiences and will never forget them. I can also say that is was while I was interning here at Kiss 98.5 that I met my future husband Nick Jonas. Now won’t that make a cute story to tell the grandkids?!
So remember, never be embarrassed or have shame or be held accountable for your fan girl tendencies. And when in doubt, listen to Kiss 98.5 for all of your fan girl needs, I have a feeling they will be able to hook you up…
