This week I’m going to give you all a look at my current favorite one of the newer, more up-and-coming musical sensations on YouTube. I’m staying in Upstate New York again, too.
In the town of Poughkeepsie there is a band called Against The Current. They’re a Pop/Rock outfit of five consisting of guitarists Daniel Gow and Jeremy Rompala, bassist Joe Simmons, drummer Will Ferri, and featuring the vocal talent of Chrissy Costanza.
Someone’s going to yell at me for comparing bands, but I’m going to anyway; Against The Current reminds me of a younger Paramore sometimes. Chrissy seems to love singing at a lower, more “rocker chick” register, like she did in the band’s debut single “Thinking” and in their cover of “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey. That’s not all she can do, though. When Chrissy decides to sing a bit higher she absolutely blows me away.
The only problem I have with this group is that it seems like they’re moving a bit fast with little content. They’re focusing on huge, produced, edited, on-location music video covers (with Alex Goot) that they release sometimes, as opposed to taking the garage-band-on-the-internet route that YouTube loves to see so much (see next week’s post). With all the attention they get, they’re poised to be a big deal. They’ve just got to do it.
That aside, I love this band, and I love everything they’ve put out so far. Here, listen to this cover of “Good Time” by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen that they did with Alex Goot, who you might remember from last week.
