Alright, enough with the cover singers for now, let’s dive into some hip-hop.
DeStorm is arguably the top rapper on YouTube, boasting 1.3 million subscribers and almost 200 million video views. It’s near impossible to cover a rap song and make it interesting, so DeStorm had to find a different way to build up his audience on top of the occasional cover or remix. He decided to take challenges from the community to test his rapping and songwriting skills with. Hilarity followed.
Since the time he started, DeStorm has been challenged to do such things as rap a song using movie titles, the names of candies, and alphabetical order to name a few. Each and every time he’s been able to match these challenges, frequently exceeding them. He began starting every challenge video with the term “Another day, another challenge” which quickly became his slogan.
Power released his first mixtape “Be Careful” in May 2012, selling enough to mark his unofficial entry into the music industry as a performer. A while later, DeStorm released a song where he argues with his conscience over signing with a major label, coming to the conclusion that he can handle and thrive while being “in both worlds” as a kind of promise to his subscribers that while he is signing, he is not “selling out.” Since then, he has released another mixtape by the name of King Kong and has seen its single of the same name played on major media outlets like MTV. King Kong also includes the song Invincible which features singer Chester See and former YouTube #1 Ray William Johnson.
