Major League Baseball has been talking for a long time about introducing a helmet for pitchers to help protect them from line drives back to the mound.
No one seemed willing to try out the prototype, however, until this weekend, when Alex Torres, a reliever for the San Diego Padres, trotted out from the bull pen wearing one.
It’s an odd-looking piece of gear, looking more like it was designed for a big-headed cartoon character. But, if it does its job and protects the pitcher’s head, then I suspect we’ll see more pitchers wearing them.
Personally, if I were a pitcher, knowing that some of these line drives come back at 130 miles per hour or more, I’d be dressing up like a hockey goalie.
